In this tutorial Jake will be showing you how to make a Smokey fire image from scratch, this is fairly simple but does take some time to get the flames correct.
Step 1
Open a new canvas/document, this can be any size you want, best to make it fairly small 700px x 700px because a big canvas can take a long time to load the changes you have made to it.

Step 2
Now we need to choose a gradient for our image background, play around with the colours to suit you, I have chosen a blue and a dark blue for this example.

Step 3
Choose the radial gradient and start from the bottom left corner and drag it up the the top right corner.

Step 4
Now make a new layer and make a circle or a semi-circle, preferably white.
And select the smudge tool, you may need to play around with the settings to get them right.

Step 5
Now that you have the smudge tool selected just drag the white/grey circle in a backwards āSā shape, once this is done do the same thing but start outside of the smudged area and bring it into the center as your smudging the āSā again. Keep repeating this step and change the layer modes to create different effects

This is my final image after working on it for a while, please go to www.flickr.com and make an account and post you final images in our flickr pool!
