Step 1

First you need to select your image, I have one here. It’s best to use black and white / shadowy pictures, Ok lets
Get started next you need to make a duplicate (encase the first one goes wrong; feel free to make more as we go Through the steps). Then hide it.

Step 2

Now go to your levels window. (Cmd + L or ctrl + L)

Step 3

Now change some of the levels, move the grey and white bars towards the black until you get an effect like the one
Shown, once this is done click ok.

Step 4

Next go to your curves window, you may need to play around with this to get the desired look. It should look
Something like the picture indicated (mainly black and white).

Step 5

Now you will need to open your shadow/highlights window, this creates more black areas which are crucial for this
Effect. If your shadow/highlights box doesn’t look like this don’t worry just click on “show more options” and this Should give you the full range of bars. Make sure you highlight and shadow bars are all the way to the left, if
You want you can play around if other settings work better for you. Also you can move the midtone contrast bar
Around to get more dark colours. Now your image should be starting to look the part.

Step 6

This is not necessary to do but you can “Gamma Correct” your image colours, this normally works well with the image To give it an even more dark effect.

Step 7

Now your nearly done, now go to your colour range window and select the black on your image, this will make a
Selection of all the black there, fuzziness should be from 121 – 180 to get the best selection depending on your
Image.

Step 8

Here you can see the selection, create 2 new layers colour one white (or the background colour of your choice) and
Leave the other one transparent, create a gradient of your choice then select the transparent layer and simply
Drag the gradient over the top, to de-select the selected area press Cmd + D or Ctrl + D
